Elewana Scholarship Program
Our Scholarship Program works diligently to assist talented high school students from lowincome families to attend quality secondary schools in the Western Kenya region. As is the case across much of subSaharan Africa, a secondary school education in Kenya is not free. Kenyan students and their families pay an average of Ksh40,000 ($500) for school fees, tuition, books, and school uniforms. This sum far exceeds the average family income in Western Kenya.
Our sponsorship program addresses this chronic problem through a unique model that involves both the local community and international donors. Our program matches money raised within local communities with that of sponsors in the US who agree to pay 1/2 of the students’ fees throughout their secondary school career. In return, students agree to maintain at least a C+ average while the parents and local community agree to cover all remaining fees, incidental charges including those for books, uniform, and school trips.
To date, the Elewana Project has sponsored over 400 students across Busia County (Western Kenya) and beyond. Many of our graduates have gone on to higher education, and the Project has cemented
a reputation for fair and equitable distribution of scholarships free from undue influence.
Due to the demonstrable integrity of the program, communities and individuals from within Kenya have begun funding an increasing percentage of scholarships, a very positive development for the future sustainability of the program.
Please consider a generous gift to the Elewana Scholarship Program. Sponsorships are $250.00 per year and cover half of the tuition, room, and board for a specific student. As mentioned above, the other half comes from matching funds raised in local communities eager to support education in their area. Students are required to communicate with their US/UK sponsor at least once throughout the year through letter writing and photo sharing. Sponsors, in deciding to support a child for a year, are encouraged to consider what kind of student they might want to sponsor, perhaps an orphaned female, for example.
Please see our Internal Monitoring and Evaluation Document in the ‘About Us’ section of this website to get a better glimpse of the impact of this program on local communities.
